Holika Holika Lazy & Easy Smooth Egg Peeling Gel Review
Enter the cutest packaging ever. If you love Gudetama then I'm sure you will have seen the Holika Holika limited edition Gudetama series that puts your favourite egg on all your favourite skincare products. I'm a sucker for cute and novel packaging so it's really no surprise that I think this is the bee's knees. Peeling gel though? I wasn't sold on the idea but this was my first and very enjoyable peeling experience.
- CUTEST PACKAGING EVER.
- You can actually see and feel the dead skin coming off underneath your fingertips.
- Doesn't strip your skin.
- Makes your skin feel fresh and renewed.
The Holika Holika Lazy & Easy Smooth Egg Peeling Gel is a peeling gel designed to help gently scrub off all the nasties and dry skin without being super harsh. Sometimes, I find that a regular sugar scrub doesn't actually get help to remove dry skin especially in the drier, colder months (i.e. New Zealand weather at the time of this post). I was very reluctant to try a peeling gel (graphic images came to mind) however I'm very glad I did because I know consider this to be an important step to do every two or so weeks.
The Holika Holika website states that "it is a facial peeling gel formulated with natural eggs from Mountain Jiri. It sweeps away dead skin cells and dirt for a silky smooth, supple skin." As always, the English on these websites is always a great laugh but you get what they're trying to say- it gets rid of dry skin using eggs. And natural ones at that.
The product comes in a fairly large 140ml egg shaped container. The container is white with a slightly milky casing and a yellow lid with Gudetama's face on it. The process of getting the gel out of the container is an unusual one and involves you tipping it upside and squeezing is slightly. The bulkiness and shape of it makes for some awkwardness but all is forgiven when I see Gudetama. It shouldn't come as a surprise that it smells like egg whites. If you've ever done an egg face mask then you will be well acquainted with this smell- it's not hideous by any means but just a little unusual.
- I would recommend this peeling gel to just about anybody but particular those who might suffer with dry patches. I say this with caution though, as it might leave your skin a little dry. I have normal-oily skin and it does not strip my skin but unfortunately I cannot speak for my dry skin pals. I do love to use this when I've had a bad skin week as it helps to clean up any (healed) scabbing.
HOW TO USE:
- Cleanse your face as per usual. I prefer to use a gentle cleanser if I'm using the peeling gel.
- Attempt to squeeze a small amount (and fail) onto your palm.
- Rub the gel into your sin using circular motions. BE GENTLE- it is not a scrub.
- Do this for about a minute.
- Wash off and apply toner. Again, I like to use a gentle toner after this gel.
- Continue with routine.
I was very reluctant to try this gel. I genuinely thought something bad was going to happen- I couldn't fathom the thought of using something with the word peeling in the title. However, when Korean Kiwi Beauty offered to send me some of Holika Holika's peeling range I decided to take a plunge and see how bad it could really be. This is why you should take risks my friends, because you might discover something as great as peeling gel. I like to use this gel once every two or so weeks in order to get rid of the build of dead skin cells I will have unfortunately acquired during that time. In the summer I will probably use it once every three weeks.
The gel is a milky colour and is quite a light consistency. It is a gel and not a liquid, so it is definitely thicker than what you might be expecting. This consistency is perfect for rubbing into your face because it goes a pretty long way and doesn't drip anywhere. The most astounding thing about this peeling gel is the fact that it actually works. This was the first peeling product I had used and the fact I could actually feel rolled up pieces of skin (gross I know) within the first 10 seconds of rubbing it into my face was pretty shocking. I stopped immediately, looked down at my fingers and could actually see the skin. It was nasty but very, very satisfying. The directions suggest only using it for less than a minute so I never use it for very long- honestly it does its job so quickly that you shouldn't need longer than that.
The feeling after you wash off the gel is really something. It leaves my skin feeling very fresh, smooth and new. Almost like how I imagine a babies face to feel. It's that level of smoothness. You can feel it help to tighten your pores also which is what eggs are good at. As mentioned earlier, I have normal-oily skin so I don't tend to have a problem with products drying out my skin. This peeling gel does not strip my skin, nor does it leave it feeling too tight despite helping to tighten your pores. Instead it feels brand new. I don't understand the science behind it but I'm all for it if it's going to make my skin feel younger (she says at the old age of 21).
The Lazy & Easy Egg Peeling Gel is affordable considering how long this product should last you. It retails for about 16NZD/12.50USD which appears to be fairly middle of the range when I compare peeling gels on Memebox.
INGREDIENTS: WHAT THEY'RE FOR AND WHAT THEY DO:
The most obvious ingredient in this gel is the presence of egg whites, which is basically the premise of this product. Egg whites are pretty well known for their ability to tighten your pores due to their astringency. As a result they pare a particularly good ingredient to keep an eye out for if you have oily skin as it can help reduce sebum. Egg whites also helps to shrink the pores so that they appear smaller. However with most things, this shrinkage is not permanent but still worth doing every so often!
Another notable ingredient is Saccharum Offinarum or sugar cane. Sugar cane extracts are a popular ingredient to use in exfoliation products because they are a main source of glycolic acid thus helping to make your skin look healthier and smoother. According to MyChelle Dermaceuticals they help to "stimulate the lymphatic system to encourage detoxification and skin purification."
It also contains ingredients such as orange fruit extract, lemon extract and rose to help bolster those tightening and silky-smooth feeling properties.
1/5: Negative, nada, no.
2/5: Didn't do anything for me.
3/5: It had its effects but there are many more products out there that do better for my skin type.
4/5: Going great! Going to keep using until I find something more effective. I LOVE this product but I am reluctant to give anything holy grail status unless it is ride or die.
5/5: HOLY GRAIL STATUS.
