COSRX Low-pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser Review
WELCOME TO FARRELLIA!
Hiya! My name is Shaleen- I'm a newly 21 year old from the bottom of the world with a skincare obsession.
Chances are, you've already heard of this gel cleanser. It has made waves in the Korean Beauty world due to its affordability and effectiveness- so much so that it is often recommended for first timers. Most Kbeauty lovers have had this product at one point in their life and probably still own one! Unlike a lot of cult products, the COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser definitely deserves its star reputation.
- Foams up very well.
- Very basic product so great for beginners.
- Low pH cleanser- doesn't disrupt your skins natural balance.
- Uses tea-tree to fight acne.
- Very gentle, suitable for sensitive skin.
- Leaves your face clean without stripping!
- Smells pretty darn good.
- Really, really affordable.
The COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is a gel cleanser that you would typically use in the second step of your skincare routine. However, I don't always use oils in my morning routine so often times this becomes my first and only cleanse. COSRX are well known for skincare products that actually help to treat acne. This is even expressed in the name of the company, COS representing 'cosmetic' and RX meaning 'prescription'. As a result, it has built up a pretty big following. This gel cleanser is a perfect example of their skincare agenda- it helps reduce oil, cleanse the skin, fight acne, all the while smelling fresh! The bottle itself is a white (almost reflective), blue and yellow and comes in a whooping 150ml. That's huge considering how much product you actually use (hint- not very much). Even though it says 'good morning' in the title, feel free to use it in your night time routine!
- The Good Morning Gel Cleanser was actually a product of crowdsourcing feedback from their customers. It was found that most customers, were in the market for a low pH cleanser. And voila! A few months later, COSRX came out with this little guy who has a pH of 5. This just shows how responsive Korean skincare companies are. Pretty cool huh?
I recommend this product to every skin type. Why? It is crazy gentle (sensitive), does not strip your skin (dry), contains tea-tree to help contain oil (oily). Did I mention that it smells amazing?
HOW TO USE:
- Pat hot water onto your face to make it moist (this helps to foam).
- Gently squeeze a pea size amount of gel onto your finger.
- Using circular motions, massage the gel into your skin.
- Might as well do this for a minute or two- it feels nice.
- Rinse off with warm water.
This is going to be a rather short review because this product and its style of cleansing is very to the point. I really like gel cleansers, more so than foam cleansers- it just feels nicer on my face. One of the best things about the COSRX GM Cleanser is that it foams so well. So much so, that the texture is almost a hybrid between foam and gel. I don't know about you, but in the morning, I want things to be as easy as possible. I'm always half asleep when I begin my skincare routine (it is the first thing I do in the morning) so anything that takes too much effort, I'm not about. With this cleanser, COSRX makes cleansing in the morning effortless, easy and enjoyable. This is also due to the smell, which is a really refreshing tea-tree scent. Normally tea-tree in skincare smells strong, too strong even, so it surprises me to say that it is a very refreshing way to start the morning. The presence of tea-tree means that this cleanser is very adept at fighting acne (more on that below) and keeping oil at bay so is constantly recommended for oily and acne-prone skin. However, I've also found that it doesn't strip my skin. This is super important because even as an oiler skin type, you don't want a cleanser to completely strip your natural oils. The main result of this cleanser is that it does its job and does it thoroughly. It's not a magical product but it feels nice, is affordable, smells good and is just a really nice way to begin your day.
The COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is outstandingly cheap. Mind-boggling almost. It retails for 13NZD and 11USD. Compared to most other cleansers, its at least $5 cheaper- A COMPLETE STEAL. This is why it is almost aways recommended for a newbie to the Korean skincare world. It'll likely convince you to continue on with your hunt to built your 10 step arsenal.
INGREDIENTS: WHY THEY'RE THERE AND WHAT THEY DO.
As discussed earlier, tea-tree is a big one for the COSRX GM Cleanser. It is a wonderful antiseptic which means that it does a really good job at cleaning your skin and preventing breakouts. I'm usually sold if a product has tea-tree oil in it- I've been using tea-tree skin treatments for years now and swear by it. If you're unfamiliar with the benefits of tea tree on your skin, click here for an interesting and informative read.
It also contains Nelumbo Nucifera Leaf Extract which is the fancy Latin world for a lotus flower. Lotus plants have heaps of great skin benefits such as antioxidants (which helps to keep your skin healthy and clear), hydration, moisturises and helps in increasing the skin's elasticity thus leading to younger and healthier looking skin! Many skincare products use this extract as one of its top ingredients because of its ability to instantly hydrate the skin. When you sleep, you're not taking in any water so you neglect to hydrate your skin or your body. That's why this cleanser is a perfect start to the morning as it restores all the hydration you might have lost overnight!
It does contain Betaine Salicylate but these days you might be hard pressed to find a product that doesn't. I personally don't react to this BHA but has been known to cause irritation. This cleanser is so gentle and the percentage is low so you'll likely be in the clear. Betaine Salicylate is a great natural exfoliator that helps to unclog your pores and keep them fresh.
This cleanser is an all round very moisturising and hydrating gel. There are heaps more moisturising ingredients in the list including Lobata Root Extract, Cryptomeria Japonica Leaf Extract (also contains antioxidants) and Pinus Palustris Leaf Extract. Yay nature!
- If you wish to look into the ingredient list yourself, here is the COSDNA entry.
